The stream restoration project is located near the City of Marion, in Nebo Township, McDowell County, North Carolina. The project realties include the restoration of 2,727 linear feet of the Thompson Fork mainstem and 1,948 linear feet of an unnamed tributary (UT); also included is 390 linear feet of enhancement and 356 linear feet of preservation along UT- The stream is required to me monitored for 5 years. 2010 was Year 2 out of 5 for monitoring activities. In 2009 and 2010 there was observed to be scattered areas along UT (in the upper portion of the restoration reach) that were developing wetland vegetation within the stream channel, attributed to the deposition of sediment. The wetland vegetation will decrease channel flow capacity and reduce flow velocities during times of low flow, which will lead to the deposition of additional sediment and continued aggradation within the stream channel. Based on our observations of the channel condition and discussions with NCEEP, we believe the appropriate corrective action is to remove the accumulated sediment and vegetation from the channel and restore a flow condition that we believe will prevent a recurrence of the described impairment. Wetlands Resource Center intends to perform work along UT during the spring of 2011 in order to clear the channel of excessive sediment and wetland vegetation, and restore the channel to a more functional channel morphology. The work shall be completed using a small excavator and all material removed from the channel will be deposited and stabilized outside of the flood prone area of the channel. This letter is intended as a coordination document with the various regulatory agencies listed with the purpose of informing them of the impending work to be done on the channel.
