The North Carolina Division of Water Resources conducted an inspection of the 287 Shady Lane on January 6,
2021. This inspection was conducted to verify that the facility is operating in compliance with the conditions and
limitations specified in NPDES WW Permit No. NCG550300. A summary of the findings and comments noted
during the inspection are provided in the enclosed copy of the inspection report.

The Compliance Evaluation inspection was conducted by Division of Water Resources staff from the Asheville
Regional Office. The following deficiencies was noted during the inspection:

Remedial actions should have already been taken to correct this problem and prevent further occurrences in the
future. The Division of Water Resources may pursue enforcement action for this and any additional violations of
State law. To prevent further action, carefully review these deficiencies and address the causes of
non-compliance to prevent the recurrence of similar situations.

Lauren Armeni with the Asheville Regional Office conducted a compliance evaluation inspection of the
single-family wastewater disposal system that services 287 Shady Lane. This inspection was
conducted to determine whether the system is being operated and maintained in compliance with
General NPDES Permit No. NCG550000.
The permit is currently expired and the fees are past due. Please pay the provided invoice and fill out
the Change of Ownership form to receive the new Certificate of Coverage.
The system consists of a septic tank, 2 sand filters, a UV disinfection system and a discharge pipe to
Lake Emory. The inspection reflects non-compliance with the permit. The following deficiencies were
noted:
1.It is unknown if and when the last time the septic tank was inspected or pumped. The tank should
be inspected to verify that the solids level is not greater than 1/3 of the liquid depth in any
compartment, and if it is, the tank should be pumped.
2.It is unknown if or when the last time the UV system was checked.
3.The outfall (discharge pipe) could not be located due to heavy vegetation and a steep bank.
4.It is unknown whether or not annual sampling is being conducted. If it is found that the effluent pipe
is discharging, annual sampling must be conducted.
A septic system company can be hired to inspect and/or pump the septic tank, inspect the UV system
and locate the discharge pipe.
