SUBJECT: Request for a Minor Modification of Existing CAMA Major Development Permit # 22-07 for
Replacement of Bridge No. 198 on SR 1172 (Sunset Beach Bridge) over the
Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway in Brunswick County;
TIP B-0682; WBS # 32575.3.2
Dear Mr. Lane:
The North Carolina Department of Transportation is requesting a minor modification to CAMA Major Development
Permit # 22-07 for the replacement of Bridge No. 198 on SR 1172 (Stmset Beach Bridge) over the Atlantic
Intracoastal Waterway in Brunswick County; TIP B-0682.
The modification request is that Condition 33 of the subject permit be eliminated. Condition 33 states "9n
accordance with commitments made by the permittee and as requested by the Town of Sunset Beach, approximately
105 feet of the existing bridge on the north side of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway shall be left in place for public
access use." The basis for the request to eliminate Condition 33 is that the NC Wildlife Resources Commission
intends to place a boat ramp at this location, and the bridge portion that would remain needs to be removed to -
facilitate the installation of the proposed boat ramp. Please see the attached letter from the NC Wildlife Resources
Commission in this regard. The proposed boat ramp would provide public access use as intended by Condition 33 of
the permit, therefore, the need to leave in place a portion of the existing bridge is alleviated. Therefore, I request - -
that Condition 33 of CAMA Permit # 22-07 be eliminated. NCDOT acknowledges that $100.00 will be debited
against the WBS element provided above for this minor modification.
Thank you for considering this request. If you have any questions or need additional information please contact me
at (910) 251-5724.

RE: Sunset Beach Proposed Boating Access Area DOT Permit modification
Dear Stephen:
As you are aware, the Town of Sunset Beach has recently been granted a variance for the construction of a boating
access area on a portion of the DOT ROW that is to be abandoned to the town once the new high rise bridge project
is complete. The WRC has agreed to design and fund construction of the boating access area. Currently, the plans
for the bridge project show the contractor leaving in a 105' section of the bridge to be used as a public fishing pier.
The boating access area project was granted a variance based on the understanding that the footprint of the proposed
ramp would be within the footprint of the existing bridge, which will require the removal of the entire bridge
structure.
The WRC has been in contact with the DOT, and are working with them to attempt to get the bridge removed while
the contractor is still on site, saving the WRC a substantial amount of money in mobilization and disposal costs. We
have received a proposal from the contractor and approve of the costs, and will be working with the DOT to
facilitate the financial transfer.
Please accept this letter as a notification of intent from the Wildlife Resources Commission, in regards to a request
made to the NCDOT that the WRC provide a letter stating that the Commission is fully prepared to execute and fund
the project. The WRC already has the funding in place and ready for transfer, and is moving forward with the rest
of the permitting process. The project still requires several permits, but the CAMA permit has been received, and all
other permits have either been applied for or will be applied for as other permits are received. The WRC is 100%
committed to seeing this project through to fruition.
My understanding is that a permit modification will be required to change the DOT's major permit , and that this
will need to be handled by yourself and the DOT. If there is anything that I can do to help facilitate the
modification, please let me know. You can reach me any time at 919-707-0154, or 919-218-2064.
Thank you,
Tom Covington
