Concerns this is no longer a fallow field. RES will check in with construction project manager to ensure this is still a fallow field and no row crops are planted within the easement. IRT discussed briefly about the use of multiple lines of pipe and how it can cause the crossing to widen out if installed correctly for stability with the appropriate amount of material between the culverts. Further reemphasizing why multiple lines of pipe conveying normal flow is typically not an appropriate design. RES will investigate using different pipes for future projects to avoid any potential failures or concerns. IRT suggests rock placed on banks or within the buffer during construction not shown on the approved mitigation design plan should be called out on the as -built redline drawing and mentioned in the baseline report. RES will include these on all future as -built redline drawings. As constructed, the Compass Point Mitigation Project is proposed to provide 4,155 stream mitigation units (SMUs). Site Visit Discussion General topics discussed with the IRT include deviations to the planting plan, vegetation plots, easement adjustments, and the stream crossing at the confluence. Planting Plan: - IRT asked that explanations for species changes be included in the as -built and that they be carefully considered, especially when species are not typically included in the native tree species stocks for mitigation sites such as black walnut (Juglans nigra) and southern crabapple (Malus angusifolia) - RES recommended the idea of removing stems of aforementioned species if IRT thought that was best path - In the future, significant changes to the planting plan should be discussed with the IRT in advance of planting. - IRT plans to discuss and follow up with RES regarding any next steps and or requirements Design Changes - A log sill was not installed on DWI-C due to bedrock being close to elevation. No concerns regarding this. - Rock was placed in areas to address runoff and erosion on DWI. RES is optimistic that once plants grow, these areas will no longer be an issue but will be sure to monitor these areas consistently. IRT suggests rock placed on banks or within the buffer during construction not shown on the approved mitigation design plan should be called out on the as -built redline drawing and mentioned in the baseline report. RES will include these on all future as -built redline drawings. Crossing and Fencing Livestock have been excluded completely from the project, but the rest of the property will remain in livestock. Therefore, fencing has been installed around the entire project and connected to existing fencing near the Yadkin River. IRT had concerns about the culvert crossing at the top of the project o Photo shows only about 6 inches of material on top and minimal material between the culverts. The IRT suggests monitoring the structure closely throughout monitoring years and, in the future, to include 12-18 inches of material on top and between structures to reduce the potential of the culverts failing or washing out. RES will be sure to follow this protocol suggested from the IRT. o IRT discussed briefly about the use of multiple lines of pipe and how it can cause the crossing to widen out if installed correctly for stability with the appropriate amount of material between the culverts. Further reemphasizing why multiple lines of pipe conveying normal flow is typically not an appropriate design. RES will investigate using different pipes for future projects to avoid any potential failures or concerns. Gaffes - IRT mentioned the location of the stream gauge on DWI -A o Gauge is located mid -way down reach. - RES will position gauges near the top of reaches on future projects Vegetation Plots - Concerns about diversity of plants on plots 1-4. Suggest paying attention to diversity while monitoring. - Vegetation Plot 8 looks to have row crop or some other species growing within the plot. Concerns this is no longer a fallow field. RES will check in with construction project manager to ensure this is still a fallow field and no row crops are planted within the easement. Story Map Suggestions - IRT suggests RES to double check stationing is connected to the centerline and not the thalweg. - IRT would like to see photo points on DW 1-E facing towards the Yadkin River Next steps: - MY1 will occur on normal schedule in 2021.
