Department of Natural Resources and Community Development ! •.)^ P.O. Box 950 ;. Mooresville, N.C. 28115 ATTN: Mr. Thurman Horne Dear Mr. Horne: lJf\N In reference to our April 26 telephone conviStNerion regarding the instilation of a workable and satisfactory sewage disposal system for my residence, I am sending you this letter and the enclosed maps. It was suggested that I give you a call and discuss my situation with you by Mr.James McEntire of the Gaston County Health Department. Have today requested that Mr. McEntire get in touch with you to confire my situation which I have described. The attached maps show the County, Township, and community that I live in. They also show my property and the stream in question. You will notice that the stream does not run directly through my property. There is a strip of land aproximately eight to ten yards wide between the back of my property and the stream. However there iss a state, maintained road, Oakwood Circle, which has a common rigitt of way w-i;th- my property and the stream. It is my intention to request an easement from the State Highway Department to reach the stream from my property through their right of way. Tiye stream in question is a full fledged creek which runs year around and at a swift and steady pace. It is approximately eight to ten feet wide and is reasonably deep. Approximately a month ago Mr. McEntire and a local Septic Tank Contractor recommended that I install a third conventional Septic tank drain field. The new drain field was to be two 100 feet single Tines. At the same time Mr. McEntire observed that, because of a drainage problem on my property, water was being allowed to stand on my current drain fields until it soaked the ground rather than being allowed to drain properly. He recommended that the ground over the top of the drain line be filled in order to provide for proper drainage of the ground water rather than having it stand on top of the drain line. As a result of that recommendation, I have had seven large dump truck loads of dirt hauled into my yard to be spread, worked and seeded in order to provide proper drainageof the property. Yesterday, on the day that the work on the conventional drain field was to begin, Mr. McEntire again inspected my property and said that a conventional drain field was probably not the proper solution to my septic tank problems. He then recommended that I contact you to discuss alternative methods of sewage disposal . I sincerely request your urgent consideration of this matter. One very important reason for urgency is that neighborhood children, as well as my own, are frequently caught playing in the mud created by the sewage disposal and the dilrt that has been hauled in. Another reason is that of the general nusence of having a yard full of sewage and dirt. Please let me know if there is anything else that I can do to expedite this matter. STEVE SHYTLE 729 MAPLE LEAF DRIVE GASTONIA, N.C. 28052 Dear Mr. Shytle: After evaluating your situation regarding the septic tank system serving your residence, I have made the following conclusions: 1. Your septic tank system has been previously repaired with unsatisfactory results. 2. The remaining area available for additional repairs is not suitable due to lack of soil depth, unsuitable soil characteristics, and high ground water table. 3. There is a stream near the back corner of your property. I feel that your best and possibly only solution for abating your sewage discharge is to apply for a sand filter permit from the Department of Human Resources.
