Compared to the sediment that is entering the watershed from the severe bank erosion during every storm event, the construction turbidity and sediment contribution will be negligible. Currently, the stream banks are primarily raw, vertical, and 10-15 feet tall. One of the main goals of the project is to improve stability which will greatly reduce erosion and sedimentation long term. • Only trees that need to be removed to perform the bankfull benching and bank grading will be removed. Unfortunately, the loss of trees is necessary to provide floodplain access and energy dissipation for a stable stream. Fortunately, trees will grow back but the continued soil lost to the watershed is gone for good. Also, all woody material generated from the required clearing activities will be utilized as in -stream structures and toe wood to improve habitat and stability and increase LWD. • Much of the project will have bankfull benches 50' in width or greater (at the back of the bench) and tie out to existing ground from there. All of the bench, terrace slopes, and other disturbed areas will be planted resulting in a buffer that is generally >50 feet throughout the project. The vegetation plans will be updated to more clearly reflect this. Boggs@usace.army.mil> Subject: Big Elkin restoration Hi Jake, I've reviewed the Big Elkin plans. I've got a couple of questions. Obviously due to the size of the watershed, you won't be pumping around. But this thing is going to be messy. It doesn't appear that you'll be constructing any sections off-line, either. How can you minimize turbidity for this project? Can you use coffer dams in strategic locations and at strategic times (e.g., when adjusting planform and cutting into the bank, when keying in vanes to the bank, when constructing geolifts) to minimize the amount of sediment carried downstream? What else can you do? Most of the reach to be treated has a nice forested buffer. How are you staging so that you can minimize the loss of mature trees? • It appears that the planted buffer width may be a minimum of 25' but increases from there. Can you confirm? Just need the supporting docs? -Jake From: Leslie, Andrea J <andrea.leslie@ncwildlife.org> Sent: Wednesday, December 2, 2020 2:57 PM To: Jake Byers <jbyers@eprusa.net> Subject: files for Big Elkin and Kapps Mill Dam Hi Jake, Can you send me the PCN files for the Big Elkin and Kapps Mill Dam projects in another way? They are both big files that are placed on the NCDWR server, and I have a really hard time retrieving big files (basically impossible from my home office) from that server. If you placed them in Dropbox or another location, I can retrieve them.
