SUBJECT: Compliance Inspection Report
Maggie Valley Collection System
Collection System Permit No. WQCS00122

Dear Permittee:
The North Carolina Division of Water Resources conducted an inspection of the Maggie Valley Collection
System on 11/24/2020. This inspection was conducted to verify that the facility is operating in
compliance with the conditions and limitations specified in Collection System Permit No. WQCS00122.
The findings and comments noted during this inspection are provided in the enclosed copy of the
inspection report entitled "Compliance Inspection Report".
The following items were noted during the inspection:
This system includes a relatively large number of aerial stream crossings, four of which (#'s 2, 4, 7 & 8)
have been identified as particularly vulnerable to flood debris, and at least one of which is upstream of
a drinking water intake. Maintenance and continued operation of these segments is a requirement of the
Collection System permit. It is recommended that protection and preventative maintenance of these lines
and the associated upstream areas be made a priority. In the longer term, an engineering evaluation of
alternatives to the exposed aerials could be considered.
• The system receives flow from the privately owned and maintained Valley View Trailer Park pump station.
Staff indicated that this station experiences regular operational issues and an evaluation was performed
as part of this inspection. The pump station appeared to be non -compliant in a number of areas, including
signage, security, pump redundancy and backup power. A separate letter addressing these issues will be
transmitted to the owner of that pump station.
