HARMONY FLOOD NOVEMBER 2020 11-12-20 - Thursday 1. Water breached the chlorine contact chamber around 11:30am. Left chemical pumps running, because effluent discharge from the clarifier could not be stopped. The valves that control the effluent discharge were under approximately 8-10 feet of water. 2. Contacted Wes Bell NCDWQ at 1:31pm to inform him of the situation. At this time the water from the creek breached over the side of the pond. The pond then filled up within 10-15 minutes. 3. The main disconnects in the MCC rooms were turned off to help prevent damage from the flood waters. The entire wastewater side of the road was under water. There was water damage to the lab, MCC rooms and blower buildings and pump houses. 4. When power was shut off to the system the reactor tanks equalized, and effluent flow stopped approximately 1 hour later. 5. At approximately 3:00pm water breached the flood wall behind the rendering plant allowing the plant to flood. All meat processing operations were stopped at this time. 6. Stopped bringing in any material to be processed from Wilkesboro, Monroe and Wayne Farms. 7. Transferred or diverted 8 loads of material to Valley Proteins. 8. Energy United killed all power to the facility at the pole at 9:00pm. 9. The water did not crest and start to recede until around 1:00am the following morning. 11-13-20 - Friday 1. Contractors and Tyson personnel from other locations arrived on site to start assessing the damage and began the repair process. 2. Contacted Melinda Wolanin with NCDAQ at 7:34am to make her aware of the situation here at the facility. 3. Some power was restored so that 2 blowers could be started up to supply DO to the old CMAS tank. This happened around 6:00pm. 4. Unable to pull a 3rd BOD and TSS sample for the week due to NO EFFLUENT FLOW. Also, the 2nd sample, that was pulled on Thursday was being held in our sampler to preserve it at the correct temperature until Friday `s sample was taken. The sampler was washed away in the flood, therefore that sample was lost as well. 5. Wilkesboro, Monroe and Wayne Farms processing plants were shutdown due to us not being able to take any material. 6. Transferred 11 loads of material to Valley Proteins. 11-14-20 - Saturday 1. Contractors on site cleaning buckets and breaker in the MCC Rooms, evaluating motors, starters and drives. 2. NO EFFLUENT FLOW 3. Transferred 19 loads of material to our Tyson Rendering Plant in Cumming Georgia. 11-15-20 - Sunday 1. Air header to the New CMAS was full of water, not allowing air flow to the diffusers in theta nk. A hole was cut in the pipe to allow the water to drain from it. A drain valve was installed to allow for water drainage in the future. 2. Air was restored to the New CMAS at 11:OOam. 3. 311 Pump was started around 1:OOpm to start bringing water up from the anoxic tank to the CMAS. The DO was running around 4. 4. Pond pump was started at 1:30 to begin bringing levels up in the system. 5. DAF was started up at 2:OOpm to start bringing the level in the EQ basin down. The level was at 15 feet at the time of startup. 6. Effluent flow over the weir started at 5:30pm. 7. The feather side of the rendering process was started up at 6:OOpm. The scrubbers were started prior to startup. 8. The meat side of the process was still down while repairs were being made. 11-16-20 — Monday 1. The processing plants in Wilkesboro, Monroe and Wayne Farms were started back up and all material was being transferred to other rendering facilities. 2. 4 loads of old material were hauled to the landfill. 3. Repairs to the meat side of the process were completed and some fresh material was brought in to start processing around 7:OOpm. 11-17-20 — Tuesday 1. Material from Wilkesboro, Monroe and Wayne Farms was brought back to Harmony. 2. 7 loads of old material were hauled to the landfill.
