Subject: U-2525C Sediment Loss
Dave and Dave,
I am following up on the phone messages that I left on Friday and Monday concerning sediment loss from the 4.5 inch
rain event last Thursday night. There were two sites on U-2525C where devices were overwhelmed. The first site was
adjacent to Borrow Site #3. At that site, silt fence is installed around the perimeter of the borrow site and at least 50 feet
from a nearby stream which is buffered. The silt fence was overwhelmed and sediment travelled through the 50 ft
buffer and entered the stream (see pictures). I am instructing the contractors to remove the sediment in the stream at
the entry point and approximately 150 ft downstream of the entry point where the sediment lessens considerably. I am
directing them to use the sediment removal guidelines attached. The second site is at Permit Site 4 and it involved
sediment entering a wetland and depositing prior to reaching the stream. The size of the impacted area is
approximately 200 sf (see pictures and enlarged permit plans). Sediment was up to five inches deep in some parts of the
impacted area. I am directing the contractors to use the attached sediment removal guidelines to remove the sediment
down to about one inch. They are then to use stiff metal rakes to remove most of the remaining sediment. Afterwards,
they are to seed and mulch with a native wetland/riparian seed mix. I am also forwarding you an email from the
Roadside Environmental Engineer which describes his instructions concerning repair and maintenance of the sediment
and erosion control devices and the impacted work area. Please let me know if you have any questions or if you would
like to comment further.
