P.E. Mr. John Hennessy Mr. Charles Brown, P.E., PLS Mr. Mike Kinlaw, Right of Way Agent - Division I FHWA NOTICE OF A JACKSON BYPASS DESIGN PUBLIC MEETING FOR PROPOSED NEW ALTERNATIVES FOR THE WIDENING OF US 158 NEAR JACKSON TIP Project Nos. R-2582 / R-2584 Northampton County The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will hold a Jackson Bypass Design Public Meeting for the above mentioned highway project, for new alternatives being considered in the Jackson area. This meeting will be held on Monday, July 19, 2010, between the hours of 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm, at the Northampton County Cultural Wellness Center, located at 9536 NC Highway 305, Jackson, 27845. The purpose of this meeting is to present the new alternatives that are being considered for the proposed widening of US 158, near Jackson only. Two Jackson Bypass alternatives, Old Jackson Bypass (Section D1) and Southern Jackson Bypass (Sections C1, E2, E4), were eliminated from further consideration. The remaining project corridor alternatives have not changed since they were presented at Corridor Public Hearings previously held in Garysburg, Jackson and Conway in September 2008. However, preferred alternatives for three of the four communities (Garysburg, Faisons Old Tavern, and Conway) have been selected. The preferred alternative for these communities are Garysburg Southern Bypass 1 (Sections Al, B2, 63), Faisons Northern Bypass 2 (Sections F2, F6, F10), and Conway Northern Bypass 2 (Sections G1, G6, G7, H1). Additional advertised public meetings will be scheduled for these communities at a later date. Interested citizens may drop by anytime during the above mentioned hours and view the project maps on display. The new alternatives proposed near Jackson, will be on display, as well as the old alternatives previously considered in the area, for comparison. NCDOT representatives will be available in an informal setting to answer questions regarding the proposed changes. The opportunity to submit written comments and/or questions will be provided, but relative only to the new alternatives proposed in the Jackson area. NCDOT proposes to widen US 158 from the 1-95 / NC 46 interchange to the Murfreesboro Bypass. The proposed project will utilize the existing highway in some sections, while other sections will be constructed on a new location. The widening of US 158 will convert the existing two-lane highway to a four-lane, median divided highway. The proposed highway will have 12-foot lanes, paved shoulders, and a 46-foot wide grassy median. The new alternatives under consideration involve the Jackson area only. Alternative E1 has shifted slightly to the south where it connects to E2, and E3 has shifted north to further avoid the Jackson Historic District. Anyone desiring additional information may contact Mr. Matthew Potter, P.E., NCDOT- Project Development and Environmental Analysis, 1548 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699- 1548; phone (919) 733-7844 x 227; or email: mwpotter(c)ncdot.gov.
