Sanitary Sewer Overflows -October 2020
Collection System Permit No. WQCS00170

Swain County
The Town of Bryson City has the following response to the Notice of Violation letter dated November 9,
2020 for the violation on October 29, 2020.
On the date of this violation, we received winds and rain from Hurricane Zeta. We have 3 pumps at our
main influent pump station; however, one of the pumps had been pulled and sent to be repaired which left 2
pumps to handle the flow. As a fluke accident, the main power flickered, causing pump #2 to NOT come
on and assist pump #1 with the amount of flow. The generator at the sewer plant never recognized a need
to start up, because the power was only off for a split second. The generator is exercised weekly and is
scheduled to be load -bank tested in 2021. It took the Town maintenance crew approximately 30 minutes to
respond after we received notification. At that point, the maintenance crew reset the float sequence which
engaged the second pump to help with the significant amount of flow.
Please contact me if you have additional questions concerning this response.
