PROJECT INFORMATION Project No: County: Stokes WBSNo.: 17BP.9.R.72 Document Type: Fed.Aid No: Funding: X State Federal Federal X Yes No Permit N W P 3 Permit(s): Type(s): Project Description: Replace Bridge No. 8 on NC 704 over Dan River(no off-site detour planned). SUMMARY OF HISTORIC ARCHITECTURE AND LANDSCAPES REVIEW DESCRIPTION OF REVIEW ACTIVITIES,RESULTS,AND CONCLUSIONS:HPOWeb reviewed on 19 July 2016 and yielded no NR, SL, SS, LD, or DE properties in the Area of Potential Effects (APE). One previously surveyed site, George's Mill (SK0807) is located near the existing bridge, but stands approximately 450 feet to its NW on a non-adjacent parcel (outside the APE) and well beyond likely project impact. Stokes County current GIS mapping, aerial photography, and tax information indicated a mostly wooded APE with several mid-twentieth-century residential and agricultural resources(viewed 19 July 2016). All are unexceptional examples of their types, many are altered, and most stand well outside the APE. Constructed in 1952, Bridge No. 8 is not eligible for the National Register according to the NCDOT Historic Bridge Inventory as it is not architecturally, historically, or technologically significant. Google Maps"Street View"confirmed the absence of critical architectural and landscape resources in the APE (viewed 19 July 2016). No architectural survey is required for the project as currently defined. WHY THE AVAILABLE INFORMATION PROVIDES A RELIABLE BASIS FOR REASONABLY PREDICTING THAT THERE ARE NO UNIDENTIFIED SIGNIFICANT HISTORIC ARCHITECTURAL OR LANDSCAPE RESOURCES IN THE PROJECT AREA: APE extends 600 feet to either end of the existing bridge (NW-SE) and 100 feet to either side of the NC 704 centerline (SW-NE) to encompass proposed construction activities. The comprehensive county architectural survey (1988-9) and later investigations recorded no properties in the APE. County GIS/tax materials and other visuals support the absence of significant architectural and landscape resources. No National Register-listed properties are located within the APE. Should the design of the project change, please notify NCDOT Historic Architecture as additional review may be necessary. SUPPORT DOCUMENTATION X Map(s) Previous Survey Info.
