Aquifer Protection Section — UIC Staff DENR — Division of Water Quality 1636 Mail Service Center Raleigh, NC 27699-1636 Re: Monitoring Event Report Alexander County Landfill SWS Permit #02-01 UIC Permit No. WI0300160 SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT Engineering Company, P.A. OF - SUBSURFACE UTILITY ENGINEERING (SUE) August 8, 2011 RECEIVED / DENR / DWQ Aquifer Protection Section AUG 0 9 2011 Dear Mr. Slusser: e9 U ,C unicipal Engineering Services Company, PA (MESCO) instituted quarterly monitoring for the MW-26 area of concern. Sampling was conducted in conjunction with the semi-annual and MNA monitoring procedures from June 28 to July 1, 2011. The scope -of -work for this sampling event was outlined in the Injection Well Permit Application and Well Permit o. 141 ,9). Monitoring wells MW-3, MW-11, MW-26, MW-27 and MW-3Iwere sampled for Appendix I metals by EPA Test Method 6010, Appendix I VOCs by EPA Test Method 8260, Sulfate by EPA Test Method 300.0, Chloride by Test Method SM 4500-C1-E, Alkalinity by Test Method SM232013, Total Organic Carbon (TOC) by Test Method SM 5310B and BOD by Test Method SM 5210B. Field parameters are reported on Table 1. The laboratory analysis was provided by Pace Analytical, report copies are included. Due to this quarterly event occurring in conjunction with the semi-annual and MNA sampling additional parameters not specified in the permit are included. MW-3 was not analyzed for alkalinity due to a sampling oversight; it will be included in the next event, scheduled for September 2011. Future quarterly sampling results and additional injection reports will be submitted to both the Raleigh and Mooresville offices in accordance with the permit requirements. The injection of Bac-9 was performed on February 17, 2011. The bacteria should have had ample time to migrate through the bedrock fractures to avoid being accidentally removed in the sampling process by the collection date. The flow rate in the vicinity of MW-26 is approximately 55 feet per year. Considering the injection well is roughly 50 feet up -gradient of MW-26 we should begin to see evidence of the injection around the March 2012 quarterly sampling event. Please contact us at (919) 772-5393 or m erman ,mesco.com with questions or comments.
