Normally things like new dust suppressant chemicals that might run off in stormwater discharges need to be reviewed and approved by our Water Sciences section for toxicity for approval prior to use. I'm not sure what the current protocol is right now. Thanks, Bethany Georgoulias Environmental Engineer Stormwater Program, Division of Energy, Mineral, and Land Resources N.C. Send all suspicious email as an attachment to report.spam@nc.gov Hi Bethany, I am working with our 3M Pittsboro plant to determine if they can use a surfactant for dust suppression at their conveyor. The conveyor runs to the pugmill/waste baghouse and is then dumped into a fines pile. The fines pile is then hauled by dump truck to a permanent disposal location onsite. The plan, if approved is to trial this until a flowrate can be found that suppresses the dust and doesn't clog up the pugmill. I believe the surfactant will need to be used continuously when crushing is running. Ballpark usage is 330 to 660 gallons per month. We will know more when we figure out the correct nozzle size (gpm). Are there any concerns with using this material? If so, can you recommend another material that is approved to use other than water?
