Compliance Inspection
Permit No. WI0300045
Rowan County
Dear Mr. White:
On July 15, 2020, a staff member of the Mooresville Regional Office (MRO) performed a site
visit of the Geothermal Heating/Cooling Water Return Well Loops at Catawba College under
permit WI0300045. The MRO would like to thank you and your staff for your assistance during
this site visit.
According to information provided by your office, several of the heat exchange units in the well
loops have been replaced due to normal wear and tear.
During the site visit, we selected wells for groundwater sampling, and the selected wells were
reviewed. Please proceed with the sample collection and forward the results to us when
complete.
The attached report should be self-explanatory; however, should you have any questions, feel
free to contact our office by phone at 704-235-2198 or by email at edward.watsongncdenr.gov.

Inspection Summary:
On July 15, 2020, MRO staff performed a site visit to Catawba College under permit W10300045 Geothermal Return well
network. During the site visit, wells were inspected for the three existing geothermal loops.
System sampling requirements were discussed with Catawba College staff. A well pairing of one supply well and one return
well was selected for each loop. A total of three sample pairs will be collected for the Geothermal system a Catawba
College.
Well,#3 is currently being repaired. However, the repair is expected to be completed by 7/17/2020 so the well can be
sampled.
Wells 3 & 4 will be sampled for the New Loop, Wells 13 & 16 will be sampled for Woodson Loop, and wells 9 & 10 will be
the sample pair for the Abernathy Residence Loop.
Heat exchange units have been recently changed for Salisbury -Rowan Dorm, and Pine Knot dorm in the new loop, Woodson
dorm and Stanback dorm in the Woodson well -loop. All of these heat exchange units were replaced within the last three
years.
Catawba College has decided to hire a consultant to perform the well sampling. MRO staff reminded Catawba College staff
of the importance of sterilizing the well ports before the collection of the Coliform samples. The hired consultant will also
determine the laboratory that will perform the analysis for the GW samples.

Comment: The system is composed of 16 wells. Six supply wells and ten return wells that compose three
separate geothermal loops. The loops have multiple heat exchange units.
The wells were selected are one supply well and one return well per loop. The wells were
identified as part of the site visit. Well # 3 is out of service temporaliv to replace drop pipe. This
well is expected to be return to service by 7/17/2020.
