The project seeks to improve water quality in the Ellerbe Creek watershed
and help the city of Durham meet the Falls Lake Nutrient Management
Strategy Rules through the restoration of a stream and wetland complex
that will filter storm water for approximately 485 acres of urban area north
of downtown Durham. To date the project has involved the demolition of
the former Duke Diet and Fitness Center and removal of underground
storage tanks. Design for additional site remediation and restoration is
ongoing. Additional remediation involves the removal of the top two to three
feet of soil across a majority the site and remaining impervious surfaces
including building foundation, parking lot and driveway. The restoration
work will involve the construction of a floodplain wetland complex and the
excavation of new channel alignments, as well as the placement of in -
stream habitat and grade control structures. Restoration work will involve
approximately 2,000 linear feet of stream which includes day -lighting
approximately 700 feet of currently piped stream.
A pre -application office meeting was held with NCDWR staff (Stephanie
Goss) on July 25, 2019 and included Ross Sullivan with the USACE Raleigh
Regulatory Office. A follow up site meeting took place on September 9,
