All proposed infiltration areas and existing, active utility lines located within the proposed basin/trench
must be marked and flagged_ If these areas are not flagged, the Soils Scientist reserves the right to
decline to do the investigation. if the proposed infiltration system will be located in an area of existing
pavement and there is no open area nearby, equipment capable of breaking through the impervious
layer must be provided. The soils investigation does not take the place of a soils report prepared by
an appropriate professional. The Soils Scientist will only verify the soil conditions that are reported in
the Soils Report, and make a determination as to the suitability of the site to meet the infiltration
design requirements under NCAC 2H.1000, and assumes no liability should the system fail.

ECS Project No. 22:12053
ECS Carolinas, L1_13 (ECS) recently conducted an infiltration evaluation for the proposed
infiltration area at the proposed site at off of US Highway 17 in Topsail, North Carolina. This
letter, with attachments, is the report of our investigation.
Field Investigations
On April 6, 2006, ECS conducted an exploration of the subsurface soil and ground water
conditions at five requested locations shown on the attached Site Diagram. The locations were
selected by Mr. Phil Norris, P.E. of Norris Kuske Tunstall Consulting Engineers. The purpose
of this exploration was to obtain subsurface information of the suitability of the in -place soils
for the proposed infiltration area. We explored the subsurface soil and ground water conditions
by advancing one hand auger boring into the existing ground surface at the five requested
boring locations. We visually classified the. subsurface soils and obtained representative
samples of each soil type encountered. It was not requested that ECS record the ground water
level or the seasonal high water level at the test locations. The attached Infiltration Evaluation
Form provides a summary of the subsurface conditions encountered at each hand auger boring
location.
We have conducted five infiltration tests near our hand auger boring to estimate the infiltration
rate for the subsurface soils. It was requested that the infiltration tests were to be conducted at
the surface elevation.

Infiltration Evaluation
Topsail High School
Topsail, North Carolina
ECS Project No. 22.12053
Field Test Results
At the first requested test location, the infiltration test was performed at 12 inches in grey fine
SAND and indicated an infiltration rate of 0.22 inches per minute (13.3 inches per hour). At the
second requested test location, the infiltration test was performed at 12 inches in grey fine
SAND and indicated an infiltration rate of 0.39 inches per minute (23.4 inches per hour). At the
third requested test location, the infiltration test was performed at 12 inches in grey fine SAND
and indicated an infiltration rate of 0.24 inches per minute (14.1 inches per hour). At the fourth
requested test location, the infiltration test was performed at 12 inches in grey fine SAND and
indicated an infiltration rate of 0.30 inches per minute (17.7 inches per hour). At the fifth
requested test location, the infiltration test was performed at 12 inches in grey fine SAND and
indicated an infiltration rate of 0.25 inches per minute (15.0 inches per hour).
Infiltration rates may vary within the proposed site due to possible changes in subsurface
conditions.
