Subject: RE: Monitoring of shoreline project
Hi, Meg.
I know we talked about this on the phone several weeks back, and I apologize that I haven't
gotten anything to you in writing. After the site visit and discussions with Joanne
Steenhuis at the DWQ Wilmington Regional office, we would like to see continued monitoring of
Spartina spp. and SAV density to ensure that the targeted vegetation becomes established. In
light of budget concerns and the resources available at the school, this monitoring may be
conducted by students with training and oversight provided by teachers with knowledge and
experience in conducting those types of measurements. We hope that this will provide a
learning experience for budding ecologists and minimize financial stress for the college,
while still providing data that will either verify success of the planting efforts or guide
remedial actions until success is achieved. All other monitoring of the stormwater wetland
and living shoreline may be discontinued for the purposes of the 401 Certification. Please
note that our approval does not indicate approval by any other agency or funding
organization.
I am out of the office today, but will be in tomorrow. Please feel free to contact me with
any questions or to discuss further.
Warm regards,
Tammy Hill

Subject: Re: Monitoring of shoreline pr'oject'
Hi Tammy, -
I am putting together some items fori6Ua 2009 monitoring report regarding the Shoreline
Project here at Carteret Community Coll?ge`(DWO Project #050589). The last I heard from you
via email was in April, not long after you and Joanne toured the project site.
Last December, we sent a letter to let the agencies know that our grant funding for
monitoring would end in 2009 (it did), The letter (attached) asked if you would consider
reducing the term of our monitoring. The project was constructed in 2006, and we have three
full years of monitoring. The problem (as you know) is that most potential funding sources
for monitoring are "dry" at present. I met''withour College president, Dr. Kerry
Youngblood, today to discuss this, and he agreed that prospects are not good for paid,
professional monitoring in 2010.
Would you give me a call or email at your convenience so that we can discuss this? Thanks...
Meg
