I feel that the New Hill Community Association has presented many valid points and solutions to the placement of the Waste-water Treatment Plant, but I have one overriding concern that has weighed heavily on my mind for some time. This concern has to do with the inevitable leakage of raw sewage from the source to the treatment plant and the resulting contamination of wells and surface water in the New Hill area. The pipes will run from North to South across the Beaver Creek streams to the plant. When those lines leak, not only are the local water supplies in the New Hill area going to be affected but Jordan Lake itself will receive raw sewage at the Ebenezer entrance to Jordan Lake. I find no information indicating who would be responsible for cleaning up the potential mess or providing uncontaminated water for residences in this area, or for the surface water clean-up for the livestock drinking water and irrigation ponds in the Jordan Lake Watershed. The point made at the meeting indicated that the current pumping of raw sewage within the Western Wake Partners area occurs within areas that are provided with municipal water supplies so the potable water is not contaminated when these system failures occur. In New Hill and the Jordan Lake watershed, spilled, untreated sewage will not be contained and will inevitably enter the drinking and irrigation water supplies as well as Jordan Lake itself. After attending the meeting in Apex, I agree that the most viable solution would be to treat the waste-water within the WWP communities and pump only treated water from there to the river south of Harris Lake. In that way, the water spilled during a failure of the transport system would be much less of a problem within the down-flow area. I see no other fail-safe solution to the problem. I do not want to have our wells, surface water and Jordan Lake polluted with raw sewage, which based on the past record, will happen. It would be only a matter of time.
