This inspection was conducted to determine whether the system is being operated and maintained in compliance with the requirements outlined in General NPDES Permit No. NCG550000. The Halls were not present for the inspection, but Mrs. Hall contacted me on September 29, 2020 to discuss the system and provide maintenance information. The system was originally permitted in 1993. The sand filter and septic tank are located in between the two homes. Mrs. Hall indicated the second home on the property is no longer inhabited and the water is turned off; however, it was connected to the system. The owners have plans to demo this house in the future. Please note, there is the potential for ground water to enter an inactive system if there is any damage to the plumbing. It is recommended the piping from the unhabituated house be capped, plugged or removed from the wastewater system. There were no obvious signs of ponding immediately above or around the area of the subsurface sand filter. The white PVC effluent pipe was located just to the left of the drive exiting the retaining wall. A minor drip was noted exiting the pipe, but did not appear to be of adequate volume to collect samples. The septic tank was replaced approximately 10 years ago due to flooding in the area. The tank is checked regularly but has not needed to be pumped since there are only two people residing in the home. As a reminder the following items are part of required maintenance: •Septic Tank: If the solids level begins to approach 1/3 of the liquid level, the tank will need to be pumped. •Sampling: Should you observe more than a drip from the effluent pipe, annual sampling will need to be conducted as outlined in Part I.C of the current permit. This permit is set to expire this year. The permit will automatically renew as long as all fees are paid to date. A copy of the new permit will be emailed/mailed upon renewal. Are the receiving water free of foam other than trace amounts and other debris? If effluent (diffuser pipes are required) are they operating properly? A drip was noted exiting the pipe at the time of the inspection. It did not appear to be enough to sample. See summary for further details.
