Inspection Summary:
An inspection of USMC Lejeune, Operable Unit 16, Site 93, Permit Number WQ0037909 was performed on 8/18/2020. The
inspection was performed in order to determine the status of conditions in association with the permit and to ensure
adherence to required frequency of inspection for Minor Non -Discharge Facilities. It should be noted however that the site
has a permit waiver, since the work is being performed under the CERCLA 121(e) Exemption for Superfund (SARA).
Present during the visit were Randy McElveen with DEQ, Superfund Section; Kirsten (Kitty) Hiortdahl with Camp Lejeune;
and, myself (Bryan Lievre).
The original release was from a tank which contained solvents and was located within Camp Geiger at the New River Air
Station near the southwest corner of a building located along the west side of E Street, south of 9th Street. The plume has
reached the groundwater table and migrated under E Street to the east. Impacts may have been historically present within
Edwards Creek, east of E Street; however, no impacts were observed during the inspection.
Currently one recovery well and 11 to 15 monitoring wells have been installed in association with the release. The one
recovery well was installed along the west side of E Street, downgradient of an infiltration basin. The infiltration basin has
been filled with mulch and covered with stone. Recovered contaminated groundwater is sent to the infiltration basin along
with soil bean oil to enhance biodegradation of the compounds of interest. A second infiltration basin is reportedly planned
for installation along the east side of E Street.
Three additional four inch diameter wells were in the process of being installed during the inspection. Each of the wells had
secured caps and a bollard, but were not yet finished with a manway. The other wells at the site had flush mounted
manways with concrete pads.
