The Dead Oak Mitigation Project (Project), located in Buncombe County, is
approximately two miles northwest of Alexander, NC, and is accessible from
Cedar Hill Road and Old NC 20 Highway (35.71256°N, 82.66514°W). The
Project lies within the French Broad River Basin, North Carolina
Department of Water Resources (NCDWR) sub -basin 04-03-02 and United
States Geological Survey (USGS) 8-digit hydrologic unit code (HUC)
06010105 and resides in the Broad IV ecoregion. The Project is comprised
of a 41.58-acre conservation with two easement locations, one located
within 900-feet of the French Broad River, that abuts the 2,767-acre Sandy
Mush Game Land (SMGL), and one that drains into Turkey Creek. The
Project is comprised of 11 unnamed tributaries, three that drain to Turkey
Creek, and 8 that drain to the French Broad, totaling 12,636 linear feet.
The Project is being designed to help meet compensatory mitigation
requirements for stream impacts in the HUC 06010105 and proposes to
restore 4,663 linear feet (LF), enhance 6,865 LF, preserve 1,108 LF of
existing stream.
