Brown Enterprises Inc. 235 Milton Mashburn Dr. Andrews, N.C. Facility Description: This facility Growns roughly 350,000 lb of rainbow trout per year. The facility is a flow through system utilizing from 5-6 million gallons per day depending on the rain. The facility is a mixture of concrete raceways and earthen ponds. There are six raceways approximately 8 foot wide and 60 feet long and 8 raceways which from 15-30 foot wide and from 100-150 foot long. ( See diagram of farm) Water Source: This farm draws water from the North Fork of the French Broad River. Waste Treatment System: 3 ponds at the lower end of the farm plus one large pond of 2 acres below the three smaller ponds are used to settle the waste from the farm before it reenters the river. Solids Control: Our main way of controlling the amount of solids the fish produce is by proper feeding. We track how many fish are in each pond and monthly sample each pond and raceway. Then each morning we take the water temperature, and this along with the size of the fish and the mass of fish in the pond or raceway calculate the amount of feed to be fed. We also use feed with the highest nutrient density we can find. Dead fish are picked up daily except Sunday. Material Storage: Gasoline- Stored in outside bulk storage tank. Diesel fuel -Stored in outside bulk storage tank. Engine oil-- Stored in Shop. Antifreeze -Stored in Shop Fish Feed, Weed killer, Salt, hydrogen peroxide, and formalin, are stored in Feed Building. rSee "Spill Response Plan" . Structural Maintenance: All of the farm's structures and equipment shall be inspected quarterly for any structural problems. A facility maintenance log is to be kept. If there is a structural failure that releases a significant amount feed, chemicals, etc, the event must be verbally reported to the permitting authorities. Awritten report may be required. Record Keeping: Records of end of Month Inventory, Fish hauled out, and feed fed will be used to calculate the feed conversion on a regular basis. One yearly grab sample is to be analyzed for suspended solids, settleable solids, disolved oxygen, ph, and water flowrate through farm. All records are to be kept for a minimum of three years.
