So, we will just continue that ditch to the waters edge, and we will line the new section of ditch we create with rip rap. Hope that makes sense. Also, there is a proposed rip rap pad at the waters edge, which we will still install, to further dissapate flows before the storm water enters the river. Thanks again! The riprap ditch may help to reduce velocity vs. proposed pipe. For clarification, you intend to install a riprap lined ditch instead of the pipe and eliminate the box? And, instead of the box there will be riprap? How will stormwater be conveyed to the riprap? The plans do not show a ditch of any kind or maybe it is sheet flow off the road?. Dave W. The requested change is in regard to structure 409, which is a drop inlet/box and 15” RCP that will deliver stormwater to rip rap on the bank and into the Linville River. I’ve attached the plans and the 401 permit above, and a snapshot of the area below (see black oval). They would like to replace the box and 15” pipe with a rock lined ditch. That’s actually what is in place now, and it seems to be functioning well, even with all the rain we have had in recent weeks. We still plan to have the rip rap on the bank, to dissipate the stormwater that leaves the ditch. I figured replacing a pipe with a ditch would be preferred – not that either is great habitat, but I’m assuming the rock lined ditch will be better habitat for critters that the 15” pipe. Since it was part of the plans that were permitted with the 401, I wanted to seek your approval before making the change. Also, wanted to clarify that it is a stormwater measure, so no jurisdictional features should be impacted by the change. Let me know if you need additional information. Thanks, (and this should be my least email to you for the day!:)) Kevin 2 Kevin Hining Division 11 Environmental Officer North Carolina Department of Transportation 828-386-7202 cell kjhining@ncdot.gov 801 Statesville Rd.
