Good afternoon,
I am reviewing the above mentioned project and I wanted to make sure you talk to Byron Hamstead with the USFWS
regarding dwarf -flowered heartleaf (Hexastylis naniflora). Although there are no records of protected species within a
mile of the project, the lack of records are likely an indication of a lack of surveys. An on -site survey is the only means to
determine if a project will impact a listed species.
We also recommend avoiding or minimizing impacts by moving the road further east-northeast to where there is no
perennial or intermittent stream (Fig. 2), or approach it from Shelby Road.
NCWRC recommends a 100-ft, undisturbed buffer on each side of a perennial stream, and a 50-ft buffer, undisturbed
buffer on each side of an intermittent stream. Furthermore, we suggest replanting disturbed areas with native seeds
and plants, and avoiding non-native plants, such as fescue, lespedeza, and Bermuda grass.
Thank you,
Olivia
