During peak periods, if one pump malfunction, waste treatment would be limited to the capacity of one pump. One of the two Pre -Digester pump impellers has been increased in size to boost capacity. The sister pump has the smaller impeller which limits flexibility and capacity if the other pump fails. Description: Increase the size of the impeller so both pumps match. The capacity and flexibility gain will allow the process to be run with one pump during peak periods. From the sewer hub, the process water was sent to the Waste Treatment Plant for disposal. Process Waste from the Cell Lab (Cell Tables and Lab sinks) can no longer be processed through the WTP, and must be captured for alternative disposal. This project will propose an alternate method and route for handling process streams coming from the Cell Lab. Description: This project will install a new sump and drainage system for the Cell Lab. The system will include all appropriate piping, liners, monitoring, and materials to meet or exceed environmental regulations. Mechanical Scope: -Complete ground survey of excavation areas, needs to be done before project work can be completed -Excavate for new pit, trenching, new piping, and any new supports for piping run to the waste tank farm. -Install all new trench with internal pipe to all drain locations. -Pour new concrete pit -Pour Base for Pumps -Install new HDPE tank -Install Piping to new tank -Install primary and spare pump -Install pipe supports for piping run to waste tank farm -Install new nozzle on Alkaline Waste Tank -install piping run from the tank to the waste tank farm -Insulate exposed piping -Install grating over tank/pit -Install roof over salt tote area dike -Backfill any underground piping (structural fill) -Pour concrete for piping and building -Retile lab (epoxy welded flooring, talk to K. This water ultimately makes its way through the 002 Outfall. This water is non -contact cooling water that is extracted from the Cape Fear River upstream of the site, then run through cooling systems in the process plant before being discharged into the ditch. Currently, all pipes and discharges of anything other than non -contact cooling water and stormwater are permanently cut off from the channel. The Cooling Water Channel contains soils and sediments that will be removed as part of this program. Additionally, because the bottom and sidewalls of the ditch are earthen (and based on piezometric mapping), water flow in the ditch infiltrates into the lower Perched Zone, causing water to build up and flow toward lower water -bearing zones. It is our goal to dewater the Perched Zone of water to the point where it can no longer flow toward lower water zones. This requires cutting off downward flow (infiltration) from the Cooling Water Channel. Therefore, the purpose of this project is to remove soils and sediments that may contain elevated concentrations of PFAS constituents and line the ditch so that water no longer infiltrates into the Perched Zone below. Description: To properly address the infiltration issues the channel was broken down into two sections (1. North / West & East /South Channels). I've provided specifics related to each section North / West Channels: Using an engineered approach, a system of excavation and a series of engineered linings was utilized. To begin this process the bottom and sidewalls of the channel were excavated to a predetermined depth and width. Once the proper dimensions and elevation/slope was achieved a sequence of linings was applied. Lining material utilized in order were, Geosynthetic Clay Liner, Compacted Soil, Geotextile and Grout filled Revetment Mat. East / South Channels: Just as for the north and west channels an engineered approached was used for determining the best method to address the issue at hand. Channel bottom and sidewalls were excavated to a predetermined depth and slope. Once this was achieved preparation begin for so that a series of linings could be applied, The following lining sequence was executed with pre -cast concrete sections of channel added. These concrete sections are configured in a way that accepts non -contact cooling water from process unit and rain water runoff. The river intake pumps bring in sediment along with water. The sediment is allowed to settle out and is deposited as a slurry into the basin impoundments. Water content in the sediments remains elevated and is allowed to infiltrate into the Perched Zone because the basins are unlined, earthen impoundments. Because our conceptual model shows that the Perched Zone is artificially filled with water infiltrating from the Cooling Water Channel and the sediment basin impoundments, the goal of this program is to line the basins to cut off the infiltration of water into the Perched Zone, which will allow for a more efficient dewatering of the Perched Zone and cut off flow to lower water -bearing units and the river. Description: To properly address the infiltration issues the overall basin design was re- evaluated. While maintaining basin capacity the overall footprint was reduced. This was accomplished by increasing depth while reducing the amount of surface area. Basin lining was executed in two phases starting with the south basin. Once complete, south basin was placed in service then the north basin was shut down and lining activities executed. Basins were engineered to accept a series of linings along with a re- configuration of the over flow discharge box. Engineered sketches are attached. Basin Design: Using an engineered approach, a system of excavation and a series of engineered linings was utilized. To begin this process the bottom and sidewalls of the basins were excavated to a predetermined depth and width. Once the proper dimensions and elevation/slope was achieved a sequence of linings was applied. Lining material utilized in order were, Geocomposite Vent Layer, Geosynthetic Clay Liner, Geomembrane Layer, Non -Woven Geotextile Layer, 12" of compacted soil, Non -Woven Geotextile Layer, 6" layer of Concrete (Bottom) or Grout filled Revetment Mat (Sloped Sides).
