Hi Mason
Thanks for revisiting the site and searching for Michaux's sumac. I'm satisfied with the results and it seems
like a "no effect" determination is appropriate.
Thanks and take care,

John,
I revisited the Weatherford Project site located in Johnston County on May 1, 2020 to conduct a field survey for
Michaux’s Sumac during the optimal survey window of (May‐October). Prior to my site visit I visited a known location of
Michaux’s Sumac. During my site assessment I found no individual Michaux’s Sumac species within the project area. I
still believe there is suitable habitat present in the disturbed open areas of the project site. However, as we found no
species of Michaux’s Sumac on the project site and there are no known elemental occurrences of the species within 1
mile of the project site, we now conclude that the project would have “No Effect” on Michaux’s Sumac.
Please let me know if there is any additional information I can provide.

Mason,
Dale and I talked extensively about this project. Without leaves it would be very easy to miss the Michaux's
sumac stems. Sometimes plant surveys can be done on small parcels outside the optimal survey window and
still be expected to provide good results. In this case, the survey was too early. For this reason, we
recommend additional surveys be conducted during the optimal time frame (May‐ Oct in this case). In the
future, if you are planning to do a plant survey outside of the optimal survey window, please consult with us
before doing the work.
Thanks
John

John,
I just wanted to ping you about this. Do you or Dale have any input on the Sumac survey?
Thanks,

Mason ‐ I'm forwarding this to Dale to get his input on the adequacy of the survey as it was outside the survey
window and the plant did not yet have leaves.
Dale ‐ Your thoughts?
John

John,
The known population of Michaux’s sumac I visited did not have leaves on it. Attached is a photo from Feb 24, 2020.
