Thanks for the notice, Jerry. The Corps agrees with your course of action including the measures you propose to prevent
additional sediment release into streams and wetlands.

Subject: \[Non-DoD Source\] Silt Loss at Site 15 on U-2525C
Dave and Dave,
Division Seven experienced some silt loss in a jurisdictional stream on project U-
2525C at Permit Site 15. The silt entered via an uncovered manhole that outletted
to a rock lined ditch. The ditch eventually emptied into a stream. (see pictures).
The amount of silt may have been more than a five gallon bucket but it only
1
formed as a thin layer on the rock and at the stream just prior to reaching the
culvert. The layer was one half inch or less in nearly the entire reach of the rock
lined ditch and approximately one inch in the stream at the entrance of the
culvert. Due to the thinness of the layer, I did not recommend removal for fear of
making matters worse. However, I did direct the contractors to cover the manhole
and/or place a silt fence entirely around the manhole. I also directed the
contractors to seed the bare slope adjacent the rock lined ditch and manhole
which they agreed to do. In addition, I am directing the contractors to replace
hardware cloth in two SDO’s which will also call for clean riprap or 57 stone for
filtering run-off at each device and to retain any 57 stone that was released into
the stream bed. They also need to make sure the top berms are stable and when
using slope drains, ensure that they are staked down. Please let me know if there
are any recommendations or suggestions you would like to add or call me if you
have any questions.
