Brian and Lance,
We have no objections to NCDOT extending the sandbags the additional 20' due to the environmental changes
at the site. We understand that the installation of these sand bags would be finished over the weekend and
you do not require an extention to the SUP which expires August 31, 2020. Please provide us a total count of
sandbags installed when the project is completed.
Thank you.

Thanks Brian,
I don't see any major issues with allowing this extension since that was the original intent for the use of the
sandbags and if this line of sandbags is not anchored to the tieback sheetpile wall the area will continue to
erode behind the sandbags and undermine the intent of the sheetpile wall. I do want to confirm this
1
extension with the park team and we will also need to see if your SUP needs to be modified as well. We will
have an answer for you by this afternoon or sooner.
One question: Do you know why the number of sandbags were underestimated?

Good afternoon Amy and Sabrina,
I am re-sending this because I believe it was blocked on your end for having too many attachments. I attached the first
two photos and the drawing to this e-mail and will send the aerials in the second.
Please find the attached photos and drawing of our proposed sandbag extension at Southdock.
The first two photos show the sandbags as they are currently positioned, in accordance with the drawings submitted
during the permit application process.
The next four are recent aerials that depict the shoreline and stacking lanes in their present condition.
The drawing shows the proposed 20’ extension of the sand bags. We believe that by completely closing the gap between
the seawalls with sandbags we will be better able to prevent wave action from getting behind the sand bags and causing
erosion. If the gap is left unchecked in its current position the landward side of the bags will be left exposed to tides and
wave action.
Please let me know if you need any additional information.
Thank you,
