Ms. Deck,
I am contacting you in advance of an issue with our BOD analysis run on the last three days for the month of
July.
We have been experiencing issues with the Blank values and had used a different source for the dilution
water. The issue was the analysis was performed by an inexperience technician and the chlorine had not been
removed resulting in the kill of the seed source as well as resulting in lower than normal influent results. I with
my 40 year experience should have verified this had been done and failed to do so.
As the monitoring period has ended and collection of samples in the monitoring period was not possible,
I have reported the values obtained.
I have Qualified the data according to Lab Certification rules and will do so as I do each month with the
DMR.
We have since returned to the original source of dilution water and will work on the blank correction
issue with BOD runs that do not include compliance samples.
My professional opinion of 40 years is that the Effluent Values of < 2.0 are accurate values as the
dilution used to calculate were the 98% sample dilutions. 295 mL sample, 4 mL seed , and 1 mL
buffering solution required for the because dilution water was “Not” used.
The Effluent Values for all three days 29th, 30th, and 31 are <2.0 mg/L. The influent values are estimated values
as no dilutions met the take to leave one rule. These are based on the dilutions that depleted the most DO. The
29th has an estimated value of 168 mg/L, 52 mg/L on the 30th and 12 mg/L on the 31st. All of these values are
low and I am sure it was caused by the dilution water used.
If there is any more action needed in regards to this issue that I have not addressed please let me know. If there
are any compliance issues, NOV’s to be expected, any additional written notification required please let myself
or Terry Foster (copied) know and we will comply. Thank you in advance for your assistance.
.
Respectfully,
3
