Assistant Regional Supervisor
Winston Salem Regional Office
Division of Water Resources
Department of Environmental Quality
Per our conversation on 7/20/20 regarding the issues we was having at the Cub Creek Wastewater
facility and the previous reported power outage at our facility, Tyson and the wastewater plant has had
a few challenges.
Duke Energy was able to restore our power at the main facility before the power was back on to Tyson's
aerated equalization basins. Tyson lost power for approximately 10 hours which reduced their efficiency
of cleaning the water before it reaches the cub creek wastewater plant. I also requested from Tyson a
list of any new procedures and/or chemicals they are taking during this COVID event.
The TSS and BOD have stayed within the limits of our permit, but the fecal on the week of July 13-17 was
non -compliant due to numerous days of high count. We have tried many different attempts to correct
this issue. The issue is the clarity of the water however our blankets in the clarifiers have maintained a
reasonable depth. Below is some of the steps we have taken:
o Cleaned the Bulbs Daily
o Tried an additional polymer from the outfall of the aeration basin to help settle the
small particles as it reached the clarifiers
o Tried to slow down Tyson's flow to increase MCRT
o We have started raising our D.O. in the aeration basin to help with increased loading
coming do our facility.
We will continue to remain dedicated to make sure our facility is compliant. If you have any questions or
concerns, please contact me at:
