FAILED SEPTIC TANK STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE
Typically we are notified by the resident, County Health Department, or receive a complaint.
• If sewer is available and the property is inside the City, the property owner is required to
connect to sewer and decommission the septic tank by crushing or filling and
plug/disconnect the tail line. If the property owner wants to use the former septic tank for
pumping that is allowed as long as the tail line is disconnected and plugged.
• If the property is outside the City and sewer is available, it is the County Health
Department decision whether the property owner connects to sewer or receives a septic
tank permit.
• Plumbing permits and inspections from the appropriate governing inspections department
is required.
• Appropriate sewer connection fees paid and application for service (contract) signed.
• Report decommissioned septic tank addresses outside the City to the County Health
Department.
• Inside the City new construction is required to connect to sewer.
• Outside the City new construction connection to sewer if available is the decision of
either the County Building Inspections and/or the County Health Department.
