The following is a request for permit modification of the Ramseur WWTP permit
(WQ0010528) to include the installation of a groundwater monitoring well. Per Erickson
Saunders, DEQ, the request was to include the locaiton of the proposed well and the plan for
sampling in an investigatory effort to determine if groundwater quality is being impacted by
the operation of the SDU.

Town of Ramseur WWTP — Groundwater Monitoring Investigation

Dear Mr. Saunders
On behalf of the Town of Ramseur, please find enclosed a map of the WWTP site
indicating the proposed location for a downgradient monitoring well, as well as the
locations of the review and compliance boundaries of the site.
In accordance with 15A NCAC 02C .01050), this letter serves as a permit
modification request to install a groundwater monitoring well to investigate the
groundwater quality downgradient of the surface disposal unit (SDU) at the Town of
Ramseur WWTP (WQ0010528).
The installation and testing are in response to Condition I.1 of the renewed permit
dated March 31, 2020 and is being conducted as an investigatory effort to determine if
routine groundwater monitoring is necessary as part of the permit requirements.
A site visit was conducted on May 26, 2020 with Town representatives, The Wooten
Company, S&ME, and the NCDEQ Winston-Salem Regional Office to determine the
proposed location of the monitoring well and to discuss the plan for installation and
testing.
As result of the site visit, the proposed location (see attached map) was agreed upon
Per discussion with Mr. Patrick Mitchell of the Winston-Salem Regional Office, the
investigation effort will include the testing of the following parameters:
• Chloride
• Total Dissolved Solids
• Ammonia
• Nitrate
• Fecal Coliform
Volatile Compounds
• pH
• Total Organic Carbon
• Total Phosphorus
Upon completion of the testing, the sampling results will be reviewed and submitted to
Mr. Patrick Mitchell and Mr. Erickson Saunders for review. If the sampling results are
below the 2L standards for the parameters noted above, the Town will request that the
groundwater monitoring condition be removed or revised to a once per renewal cycle
schedule for the said parameters.
