Landscape contractor shall perform all tasks in a careful, workmanlike manner. it is the landscape contractor's responsibility to maintain a neat work area and remove refuse and debris from their work at the end of each day. 2- All plant material, unless otherwise specified, shall be uniformly branched and have a vigorous root system. Plant material shall be healthy, vigorous, and free fPrm defects, decay, diseases, Insects, pest eggs, and ell forms oflnfestatfan. All plant material shall be figsh, frees from transplant shock or visible wilt. Plants deemed unhealthy will be rejected. 3- All containersiock shall have been propagated in a container long enough for the root system to have developed sulticiently to hold its soil. Container stock with poorly developed root systems will be rejected. 4- Plants shall be prepared for shipment in a manner that will not cause damage to the buds, branches, stems or overall shape of the stock. Containergrown plants will be transported In the containers In which they have been grown. r Plants not installed the day of arrival on site shall be stored and protected by the contractor. Outside storage areas shall be shaded and protected from harsh sun and wind. Plants will be watered twice dally ores needed to keep moist until planted. 6- No substitutions in size or variety of plants material shall occur without the prior approval of engineer. 7- Planting will take place between June Ist and August 31st and once the pond has reached its normal pool level for at least 5 days prior to planting to ensure proper hydrology. 8- Plants will be 2-inch plugs approximately 4 inches deep grown in nursery trays. Spacing is 2-1eet on center. Planting season is June 1 through August 1. Coastal Plain Conservation Nursery in Edenton NC is a good source for high quality herbaceous plant material. Sequencing: Construction: Pond will be dug, all fixtures, inflow and outflow structures will be installed. Embankments must be seeded as soon as practicable to prevent silt Inflll of the pond. If the pond Is large enough to attract Canada Geese then goose exclusion fencing should be installed to prevent desimcilon of vegetation. Plant installation must occur in the wet with the pond at nommal pool for a minimum of 5 days prior to installation. This is to allow proper soil hydrology which should allow wetland plants to develop. Also the pond will need to be at normal pool to determine location of the planting zones Cnundated normal pool, shallow water, seasonally Inundated, etc) . Soil installation: After construction a uniform 6" layer of plating medium consisting of mature fine organic materiaY ompost and sand will be installed. These sorts of herbaceous emergent wetland plants do best In a rich 'swamp muck; organic -rich soil with lots of silt and sand. Goose exclusion fencing: Goose exclusion fencing a minimum height of X tall with metal T posts no further than 10 -12' apart will be installed prior to planting. Goose exclusion fencing will be Installed In two rows around the pond. One row will be on the outer edges of the plantings above the waterline and one row will be on the water side of the plantings. This prevents Geese from accessing the plants. If left unprotected It Is highly likely that Geese will damage If not completely destroy the plantings. Goose exclusion fencing W11 be in place for 1 year to allow plants to grow enough to withstand Goose grazing In Me second year. Plant installation: Plants will be located in the field according to existing conditions as per their depth ranges seen on planting chart on engineering drawings (site page or plan sheet number). Plant material will be carried into the designated planting areas and Installed In the proper water depth zones. Installer will dig a small hole with a soil knife, shovel, pick or other appropriate digging tool, loosen the root mass of the plug and place the plant in the planting hole so that the root collar of the plant is at but not above the surface of the surrounding soil. The hole must be deep and wide enough for the roots to fit without being jammed' in. Prior to plant going into the hole a slow release aquatic fertilizer tablet product will be placed in the hole. Warranty and maintenance. - Initial maintenance requirements: Immediately after construction the pond must be inspected bi-weekly and after every 0. S" or greater rain event. Inspection points include performance of inflow/outflow structures (leaks, blockage by debris, excessive erosion etc), ensuring there is not excessive sedimentation in the pond or erosion of the embankments, ensuring there is no cracking, erosion or settling of the impounding dam, ensure the emergency spillway is in good condition (not blocked or eroded), check proper function and condition of Goose exclusion fence. If bare soil on the embankment exists they should be reseeded Erosion on the embankments should be repaired when discovered to prevent silting -in of the pond. Debris impairing the pond function should be removed immediately. improper function of the impoundment and other structures should be addressed and repaired Immediately. Trash should be removed regularly. Long term maintenance: includes all items in initial maintenance, but after the first full growing season reduce the inspections to bi-monthly or after severe rain events. Invasive/nuisance vegetation management and removal should occur twice a year for the first year and once or twice thereafter. Invasive plants can be controlled by mechanical means i.e. mowing or weed eating or by the proper use of herbicides approved for aquatic use. The emergency spillway, pond banks and Impounding dams should be mowed once or twice a year (but not more) to prevent the establishment of woody vegetation. The idea Is to keep trees and bushes from coming in, not to make a 'manicured' appearance. Warranty: Contractor is required to warranty 803Ksurvival of the planted material for a period of two years. If after first year the BON survival has not been met, landscape contractor will replace dead material in quantities sufficient to meet the BON survival criteria. After the second year contractor will again be required to replace dead material in quantities sufficient to meet the 80%survival. Replaced material will be of same size and quality as originally installed. Contractor is not held responsible for warranty for plant material that dies due to material improper hydrelogy in the pond, Canada goose damage (unless Goose exclusion fence is installed at time of planting), third party vandalism such as mowing, weed eating, improper herbicide application, trampling by people or pets, or for extreme weather such as drought or hail damage.
