RE: Frank Busic Stream Restoration - NCWRC comments
Derek,
I have a few follow up questions/concerns:
I'm concerned about the disturbance to the wetland surrounding/adjacent to the upper portion of UT#4. Can you
please provide a very detailed construction sequence/detail specific to this area which includes what steps you will take
to minimize the impacts to the wetland area you are showing (it doesn't really allow for access to the stream except at
the top/bottom and along the channel), will there be any disturbance to the other small channels within this wetland at
the tie in locations to UT#4 what equipment will be used, what impacts it is expected to have, how will the area be
restored (ruts that form, displacement of soils etc), how structures will be installed given the wet soils (seepage around
structures upon completion, settling of structures, etc). I'm concerned about heavy structure use in what appears to be
more of a wetland seep. Given that this is the very upper most of a headwater seep and appears to be a small channel,
could you use less structures if we allowed for a greater vertical drop to lessen the intensity? I know we normally have
minimum drops and stress that often, but is this a case where that's not as important? I know Andrea is on vacation so
it may benefit in waiting to hear back from her.
With regards to the riparian planting, will planting be conducted within the wetland areas too, or will those be left as
herbaceous upon completion? If tree planting is proposed, what species will be specifically planted in those areas, as
they seem to be pretty wet? Would a different success criteria (for NRCS or grant approval purposes) be justified given
that area may not support the typical riparian planting expectations? Again, Andrea may have some further input into
this.
