Hello Heather.
Dare County would like to request an extension for the South Ferry Channel dredging event
currently being executed by NC DOT's dredge MANTEO. We are requesting a permit
extension to 1 July 2020. The dredge Manteo has been on the project site since May 15, 2020
and has completed 650 feet of dredging removing an estimated 20000 cy. NC DOT has been
delayed due to multiple uncontrollable and unforeseen issues in the last 24 days to include,
Tropical Storms, Nor'Easters, heavy winds, maintenance and manning issues due to NC DOT's
mandatory furloughs which has shut down operations for a total of 11 days so far. The tides
and current have been so strong that it shuts down operations for 4-5 hours. The project has
about 1000 feet remaining and they are averaging about 80 feet a day if conditions are good
which should take an additional 12 days. The 1 July extension matches our current federal
extension and allows an additional 4 days to account for any future unforeseen and
unpredictable issues.
I have attached an overlay showing progress and remaining 1000 feet. Please let me know if
you need anything else and thank you for the help and support.
