TY IT I lNC Narrative of Process Areas that Contribute Wastewater to Treatment Process Thomas Concrete of Carolina, Inc. Smithfield, NC 1. Cement Truck Cleanout Area Vehicle cleaning activities are conducted in the slump rack and washout pits in the western portion of the property in a designated area northwest of the office building (see Sheet 2). General vehicle cleaning activities are conducted on a 20-ft x 100-fl concrete pad on the northwest side of the site. Cleaning chemicals are stored in a 55-gallon drum and 300-gallon totes adjacent to this pad or near the slump rack west of the office building, and metered into dispenser nozzles for spray application onto the trucks. Wastewater from the vehicle cleaning process flows into a series of three settling pits and a wastewater collection and treatment system located on the northwest corner of the property. Solids are removed from the wastewater through settlement within the pits. The settling pits are each 12 feet in width, 80 feet in length, and five feet deep, with bottom slopes of 6% and have approximately 2,880 square feet of surface area. The settlement pits provide approximately 7,200 cubic feet (53,860 gallons) of secondary containment volume for collection of wastewater generated from the vehicle washing process and stormwater runoff flow from the surrounding impervious area. The water contained in the pits gravity Mows into a retention basin southwest of the settling pits, and is pumped back into the vehicle washing process and slump rack by a sump pump and three-inch rigid and flexible piping installed overhead. Solids are periodically removed from the pits with a front-end loader and transferred to a holding area on -site, where they are de -watered and transported off -site for disposal at a C&D landfill facility. The retention/recycle basin measures 140 feet by 27 feet by 6 feet deep, and has a capacity of approximately 6,617 cubic feet (49,500 gallons) with one foot of freeboard provided. Overflow from the retention/ recycle basin discharges through a rip -rap -lined emergency overflow structure and into a vegetated filter strip installed on the western property line. Flow control components for the recycle line in the retention basin to the cleaning process include a pump and manual ball valve. Energy.
