Please find attached a summary of 2018 and 2019 stormwater sampling results for the Commscope-
Catawba facility. As ynu can see from the highlighted table, the facility has had some permit
exceedances. The facility has been performing stormwater sampling on a monthly basis during
months when rain events have allowed for a three day dry period.
As per permit NCG030000, the facility is required to contact the DEMLR Regional Engineer upon four
occasions of exceedances of the permitted benchmark values. Outfall 003 (Copper and Zinc), Outfall
005 (Copper and Zinc), Outfall 009 (Copper), and Outfall 012 (Zinc) have exceeded the benchmarks on
four occasions. CornmScope has performed facility inspections on a routine basis and is working
towards solutions to reduce potential pollutant sources stored outside. The finished products
produced at the facility are large and contain metals; therefore, finding storage inside or under cover is
challenging. The facility recently replaced metal swamp coolers located on the roof with new A/C
units. Due to the age and condition of the swamp coolers, the facility anticipates this modification will
help to reduce copper and zinc contamination. The facility will continue monthly stormwater
monitoring until instructed otherwise (weather permitting).
