HomeMy WebLinkAbout20050589 Ver 1_Monitoring Report_200912222C)0 ?5 MI December 2009 Monitoring Report for Carteret Community College Shoreline Project This annual report is required as part of the conditions set for the permitting of DWQ Project #050589. Copies are being sent to both the Central Office and to the Wilmington Regional Office of the NC DWQ and to the NC DCM. Monitoring has been done in accordance with the CAMA permit, DWQ letter and permit requirements, and the NC Clean Water Management Trust Fund grant agreement. Three water quality analyses were done in 2009 by Dr. Bill Kirby-Smith of the Duke Marine Lab and the NC DWQ lab in Raleigh. The N.C. Shellfish Sanitation program also continues to use this area as a sampling site for collecting data relating rainfall to salinity changes and bacterial levels. Local middle-school students added approximately 1,000 additional Spartina alterniflora to the planting terrace areas in May and June, 2009. Janet Hanson conducted plant monitoring in May and June 2009 for survival, species and density. Ms. Hansen has also monitored oyster recruitment under the advisement of Skip Kemp of the Aquaculture Program at Carteret Community College. The next pages offer WQ data and summary of plant survivorship/density monitoring. As our grant funding for professional monitoring has closed, monitoring in 2010 will be done by Carteret Community College biology students, in accordance with advice from Tammy Hill, DWQ Raleigh, in email received 12/15/09. Report submitted on 12/18/09 by Meg Rawls, shoreline project director at Carteret Community College. (252) 222-6383 9LR@90T§L40 D_ ° 2 2000 DRR - WATER QUAUTy WETLANDS AND STORAIWATER 6RANC8 Synopsis of Monitoring Results through Dec. 2009: 1) Water quality monitoring suggests no adverse effects on local (Bogue Sound) water quality during or subsequent to construction of the project. The BMP created wetland, which shows dense plant growth after just two years, serves to slow infiltration of stormdrain runoff into the sound and has provided additional benefit as habitat for wading birds. 2) SAV- Substantial new growth of SAV is apparent in the created embayments. A manatee was spotted in one of the embayments in October, confirmed by a marine mammal expert in the building. The manatee was apparently feeding on the SAV. 3) Plant monitoring- In the BMP, which has neared maturity, both Spartina patens and S. alterniflora are presently more than 20 times as dense as when that area was first planted in 2006. The BMP also now supports a variety of other freshwater and brackish plant species (some were planted and others are "volunteers.") The rest of the project site also shows good plant survival, especially of Spartina patens. These plants are now seeding each fall. S. altern flora, planted intertidally, continues to become established. Note, on attached graph, the increase in stem density in 2009. 4$) Oyster monitoring- Data she gathered by Janet Hansen in May 2009 indicated excellent survivorship and recruitment of oyster larvae, with the reef balls (concrete domes) and oyster bag sill having approximately equal recruitment after those substrates have been in place for three years. c ' v c -c (D ( D 3 = 3 v (D (D N 1 ET 0 0 ET 0 0 0 0 0 0 5 0 0 5 5 0 0 0- 5 c co 5 5 C C 5 5 C C 5 5 C C 5 C C C C C C 0 0 ? cz O O c-- =? 0 0 O O O O O O 0 0 3 -a O O O O :E :E O O `z O O O O O O n G) `?
