BOX 25201 RALEIGH 27611-5201 JAMES G. MARTIN GOVERNOR THOMAS J. HARRELSON March 13, 1992 SECRETARY DIVISION OF HIGHWAYS WILLIAM G. MARLEY, JR., P.E. STATE HIGHWAY ADMINRSTRATOR MEMORANDUM TO: Mrs. Chrys Baggett, Director State Clearinghouse Dept. of Administration FROM: L. J. Ward, P. E., Manager Planning and Environmental Branch SUBJECT: I-40 Slope Repair and Roadway Relocation along the Pigeon River Gorge, Milepost #12 to Milepost #5, Haywood County, F. A. Project #IR-40-1(106)4, State Project No. 8.1491901, TIP Project M-236 The Planning and Environmental Branch of the Division of Highways has begun studying the proposed improvements to Interstate 40. Currently, this project is funded and it is anticipated construction will begin in fiscal year 1995. The proposed project is located on Interstate 40 from Milepost #12 to Milepost #5 in Haywood County. Due to the rugged terrain in this area, rock slides are frequent and often dangerous to motorists. It is proposed to shift sections of the Interstate 15 feet away from the cut slopes in order to provide catchment areas for rock falls. In addition, various methods of slope stabilization are proposed to reduce the likelihood of falling rocks. On the opposite side of the interstate, retaining walls are to be built to avoid direct involvement of the fill slopes with the Pigeon River. We would appreciate any information you might have that would be helpful in evaluating potential environmental impacts of the project. If applicable, please identify any permits or approvals which may be required by your agency. Your comments will be used in the preparation of a document evaluating environmental impacts of the project. It is desirable that your agency respond by April 15, 1992 so that your comments can be used in the preparation of this document. If you have any questions concerning the project, please contact Christa Atkins, Project Planning Engineer, of this Branch at (919) 733-7842. LJW/pIr Attachment a? a ?
