PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Ocean City Fishing Pier is a commercial ocean pier located within the boundaries of North Topsail Beach, Onslow County. The pier is heavily used for recreational fishing. It was constructed around 1959 and is one of the older ocean piers on Topsail Island. The most oceanward end of the pier was destroyed during Hurricane Bertha, July 1996. The applicants wish to put back what was there before Bertha and repair the portion of the pier that was not destroyed. Associated with the pier is a pier house which was not severely damaged by the Hurricane and has no consideration under this permit request. This application was necessitated because more than 50% of the pier structure was destroyed. The pier extends from the pier house on high ground across approximately 125' of public beach before reaching the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Before the storm the pier structure extended approximately 688 feet out over the ocean. About 450 linear feet of the pier was destroyed by the Hurricane. The waters of the Atlantic Ocean are classified as SB by the Division of Environmental Management. The upland portion of the property is classified as Urban Transition by the Town of North Topsail Beach and is zoned for commercial business. 10. ANTICIPATED IMPACTS Approximately 16,260 square feet of public trust areas would be shaded by the pier structure. Positive impacts include ocean access provided to recreational fishermen and vacationers. Janet M.
