One element of the preferred alternative was the construction and operation of a third north/south parallel runway located 3,700 feet west of existing Runway 18R/36L. Exhibit 1 (enclosed) depicts the preferred alternative as approved in the ROD. The preferred alternative was chosen, in part, because the runway separation allowed for triple simultaneous arrivals while minimizing taxi times for aircraft; however, that separation required technological advances and changes in air traffic control procedures that have not yet come to fruition. Therefore, because triple simultaneous arrivals are necessary to accommodate the demand at CLT, the separation between the existing Runway 18R/36L and the planned third north/south parallel runway needs to be increased to 4,300 feet (see enclosed Exhibit 2). Since the FEIS analyzed a runway alternative with this separation, the FAA has determined that a Written Re-evaluation of the FEIS and ROD will be prepared to assess the potential environmental impacts of this change. The FAA and the airport are jointly hosting an informational workshop on January 9, 2006, to update the environmental regulatory agencies on the status of the runway project and to solicit input regarding the scope of the Written Re-Evaluation. The workshop will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Charlotte at the following address: Adam Service Center, 4150 Wilkinson Boulevard, Charlotte, North Carolina 28208. Please contact Bonnie Baskin at (404) 305-7152 or at Bonnie.Baskin@faa.gov to RSVP. If you have any questions prior to the meeting please give her a call The FAA and the airport greatly appreciate your participation and assistance to date and we look forward to continuing that relationship as the Written Re-Evaluation moves forward.
