Our office receives questions about it frequently, because it looks like an oil slick on top of the water. As you know, it is a natural occurrence especially in soils with high iron content. I suppose it won’t be long before there are concerns with pond algae. That time of year. Thanks for keeping me in the loop. Dave W. NCDOT responded to a complaint from Mr. Tabor a couple weeks ago. He had iron oxidizing bacteria on the surface of the pond which he believed was oil. Dragados pulled some samples to confirm that its not petroleum. The tests show petroleum below baseline, and high nitrogen, phosphorus and TSS. The TSS is likely from organic solids as the samples were purposefully taken from areas along the 1 edges of the pond where we saw the film. 10 acres along the project in the vicinity were last fertilized on April 2, 2020. There was no direct application of fertilizer to surface waters per the permit. Let me know if you have questions. Dragados provided us with the attached test results of a water sample taken from your pond on 4/21/2020. Nitrogen, phosphorus and TSS levels were high, but petroleum was below the baseline. This is most likely due to the organic solids as the samples were taken along the edges where there were visible solids on the surface. Dragados indicates that the area in this vicinity was last fertilized on April 2, 2020, which could be contributing to these levels. Please let me know if you need anything further. Looks like some type of oil that I’ve never seen before, colored and shiny. I think that someone needs to come and pull a sample to see what’s going on. It covers about 1/4 of the lake.
