We have recently provided some email comments on this project and the Eastern Hellbender issue, including
on March 161". We are disappointed that NCDOT has not worked with us to develop a plan to survey and
provide any appropriate protections to the hellbender population in the project vicinity. We intend to survey
the site, hopefully in June, to determine if hellbenders are present in the project footprint and we will share
the results with NCDOT. We hope to work with them then on any additional protections that may be
wa rra nted.
We have developed a hellbender protection protocol checklist to ensure the minimum disruption of NCDOT
operations and to make sure we are only asking for protections where we can verify the need. It also attempts
to answer their question as to why this particular Federal Species of Concern should have special protections.
We want to assure NCDOT that this species is particularly vulnerable to construction activities and in need of
special efforts. We don't intend for these efforts to set a precedence for other FSC. The final version of the
protocol checklist is under internal review right now. I hope to send it to all on this email next week.
