PART IV - EVALUATION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The company produces waveguide fibers which are used for
telecommunications and data transmission. Sanitary wastewater is
discharged to the City of Wilmington system., When the permit was
reissued last time, the company proposed to discharge wastewater
from wet scrubbers which were to be part of the air emissions
control system. The waste water, which was to contain
hydrochloric acid, sodium chloride, suspended solids and small
quantities of germanium, was to be treated and discharged to the
Northeast Cape Fear River as outfall 003. The company never
constructed the outfall and has not discharged this wastewater.
The waste is being treated in a manner that does not require a
discharge. The company, therefore wishes to delete outfall 003
from the' permit .
Outfalls 001 and 002 include non -contact cooling water from
cooling towers, air-conditioning condensate, air compressor
cooling water, bleed off from wells and roof and yard runoff.
Each outfall has an open trough and wier for sample collection and
flow measurement. The sampling points look clean and free of oil
residue or other nuisance conditions.
It is recommended that the permit be reissued containing
standard conditions for non -contact cooling water.
