Hi Audrey,
Both samples have very low levels of algae and do not look like algal blooms.
The algae I did find are typical for freshwaters at this time of year —diatoms, greens, and one cyanobacteria filament.
Diatoms and microgreens are indicators of good water quality.
I've heard the diatom Aulacoseira can give water a musty taste, but it is harmless.
The cyanobacteria Pseudanabaena is very common at this time of year and is not a problem at low levels.
If someone gave me these samples and didn't tell me anything about why they were collected, I wouldn't think twice about
them —too little algae.
Best,
Elizabeth

Elizabeth,
Thank you so much for the info and the help. I have shipped a box with two samples UPS. It should be there tomorrow
but I did not overnight it. They contain more than 50 mis. One is from our intake area and the other from the bank
about 100 yards from the intake. The river is really muddy from the rain yesterday so I don't know how or if that will
affect the sample. Thank you again.
Audrey

Hi Audrey,
We are glad to assist and help trouble shoot but cannot do weekly monitoring. Please contact the MRO drinking water
plant consultant at 704-663-1699 to see if someone offers those services in your area.
Or, contact Corey Basinger or Andrew Pitner (cc'ed above) and ask if you can get a name of someone in the water supply
world who could help.
Once I get the sample, I will e-mail you later that day with a list of the most numerous types of algae in the sample.
Algal samples can give information, but they do not fix problems.
Thanks,
Elizabeth

Hi Audrey,
If people are complaining about taste and odor issues and you think it's algae, I need to know what sort of algae is in
your intake.
Please send about 50 ml of water in a clean plastic bottle to:

Due to CV19, we are doing a lot of working from home.
When the sample is on its way, please e-mail me so I know to come in and receive the sample.
Thanks,
Elizabeth
