I am writing in support of the permit application proposed for a bridge crossing the French Broad River in Buncombe
County.
As a community leader, I am worried that many of the citizens in Buncombe County are not aware of the efforts to
improve the economy in a meaningful way: creating good jobs, and growing the wage base and economy of this area. I
think this infrastructure improvement will work to provide additional investment in the economy here, and provide good
jobs for the citizens. Being a County with a lot of mountain terrain, good job sites are difficult to come by in terms of
meaningful economic expansion. This project is in strong, primary economic corridor, and approval of the permit will
allow easy access to potential sites for economic development.
Many think of our area as strictly tourism driven, with low paying jobs. This is a misconception as tourism accounts for
only about a fifth of our direct jobs. There are larger segments, such as health care, and manufactaoring that provide
really good jobs for our citizens. On the whole our economic development folks here have done a great job, with the
assistance of the City and County, in bringing good paying jobs to this area. This permit approval will add to their ability
to continue this work
Finally with Buncombe County serving as an economic center in Western North Carolina, any job growth here will have
impact beyond this County across the region.
It is important that we have this project approved for the benefit of all our citizens.
Thank you,
David G. Worley
