If your design is not changing characteristics of the stream and its flow then no need to add rip rap. Thanks and I agree on an open bottom which is exactly why we are designing a bottomless arch. What about a box culvert which is buried 1’? Does the 1’ bury remove the requirement for rip rap energy dissipater? Seems like scour 2 would be less of a concern with a buried invert. Army Corps is not requiring it, I just need to include it in the permit if the City will require it. If you are designing an open bottom culvert then no rip rap would be required. That of course is working with the assumption that you are not changing the flow or other characteristics such that a change in lining is required in order to be non-erosive. I understand the desire to make sure that the City is not going to require differently than what you are submitting to the Corps. You should be OK. Gary, There are 2 road crossings on this project, to minimize impacts and mitigation we are proposing a bottomless arched culvert on one crossing and a box culvert on the other. The bottomless arch will not have any rip rap as we are not disturbing the creek channel and simply spanning over it. The box culvert will be buried 1’ for aquatic life transfer, but our preliminary plans do not call for rip rap in order to minimize channel impacts. The Corps has asked if the City will require rip rap, so rather than revising the permit later, I would like to provide them with an accurate answer. Is there a specific Raleigh requirement to show rip rap in the stream channel at the box culvert?
