Dear Ms. Beckwith,
I would like to encourage the denial of a permit for the extension of the Macon County
Airport Runway 7. There are I think several reasons for denial. However, my principle
reason is the one that hurts those who love our history. We see the loss of an
archaeological site that would with careful study reveal the life of the Cherokee in one
of their most sacred villages, Joree. The present archaeological study has only brought
forth tantalizing clues of what could be found. These clues seem to indicate a village
that is much older than thought and unique in that it was enclosed with palisades.
Those people who would like to extend the runway are sincere but I question their
conclusions that this extension will create an economic boost. A questionable economic
boost worth the loss forever of our heritage? Economic Geographer, Jeff Neff, of Western
Carolina University has concluded that the model of economic development of small
manufacturing locating in rural areas is not working and has been out of date for a number
of years. In effect, an extension of the runway will not bring in any significant
employment and we will have diminished the real economic resource we have our cultural
heritage.
Finally, I would like to request a public hearing in Macon County for the request for a
permit to extend the Macon County NC Airport runway.

The people of Macon County NC need to be allowed to participate in a public hearing
regarding the Airport as a Native American I am deeply concerned about the Historic
properties, and our water supply would be affected as alot of residents of Macon County
have wells for their water needs. This would also affect increase traffic to residential
areas. We all in Macon County take pride in our community, we do not want it destroyed by
greed Our children and their children should have the right to enjoy what we have through
