Facility Activities and Processes:
• SIC Code 2821 (Primary) — Plastics, materials & resins; SIC Code 2843 — Surface agents; SIC Code
2879 — Agricultural chemicals; and SIC Code 3069 — Fabricated rubber products
• The initial production at this facility focused on the compounding of rubber latex. Nowadays, the
Gastonia Urethanes site is the largest producer of castable urethane pre -polymers in the United
States. PU prepolymers are used in the production of items for recreational markets and for
industrial applications (from website).
• There is a note in the 2009 staff report that says the facility needs representative outfall status. I
don't know if the facility followed through.
Monitoring Information:
• Large facility with 6 outfalls. Have numerous TRI chemicals onsite with secondary containment.
Impairment:
• This site discharges to impaired waters experiencing problems with benthos and fish tissue
mercury.
• Poor land use. Livestock access, and urban stormwater are significant concerns for this drainage
basin. The segment has very old TMDL with limited data for nutrients. Also, further downstream,
Lake Wylie is impaired and has a TMDL for chlorophyll a. This stream is included in the Lake
Wylie TMDL, with nitrogen and phosphorous the pollutants of concern.
